Renaissance Canvas Prints

While imagery may speak throughout the ages, what we are especially interested in at Renaissance Canvas Prints is the art work produced during the renaissance period between the fourteenth and seventeenth century, which included the work of the great visionaries Leonardo Da Vinci and Michelangelo.

Humans have been drawing to put our experiences in picture form for as long as history has recorded. Cave drawings are thought to represent the real life experiences of those who were living at the time and were created as an attempt to make sense of the existential questions of life which still fascinate us today, as well as to record ideas and the real world goings on and challenges they faced for the educational benefit of other cave dwelling troglodytes.

The old cliché that a picture tells a thousand words may have become a little worn out with the passage of time, but its essential truth remains as true as it ever did. So much depth and emotion can be captured in an image which can continue to reverberate through the ages. Think of the carvings made at the Khmer Hindu temples of Angkor Wat in Cambodia or on Egyptian pyramids – we may never know the motivating thoughts which inspired those magnificent examples of human creativity, but we are still speculating and discussing them two centuries after their origins which stands at as a testament to the power of the image.

While much of the art produced during this period reflects religious themes, this is a reflection of the Zeitgeist in the era, occurring as it did during the religious ‘dark ages’ which included such retrograde acts as the Spanish Inquisition, during which witches were and non believers were burnt alongside art that did not conform to the expectations of the Roman church.
